N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov House Museum

N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov House MuseumN.A. Rimsky-Korsakov Memorial House Museum is one of the oldest museums in Leningrad region. It was founded in 1944 to commemorate the great composer centenary.

Composer family took an active part in creating and setting the exhibit. The interiors were carefully recreated basing on archival documents and research conducted. Now the museum has a status of a national historic and cultural monument.

Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov was born in a noble family with naval traditions. The composer's elder brother Voin Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov was a famous navigator and reformer of naval education. Life of Nikolay was also connected with the sea. But his early devotion to music finally prevailed, making music his main occupation and leaving his marine experience a chance to be heard in his symphonic compositions.

House of Rimsky-Korsakov's was thought to be built by Nikolay's grandfather Petr Voinovich in the beginning of the 19th century. Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov was born on March 18, 1844 and spent his childhood here.

The museum exhibits feature the history of the great composer's family: the history of Rimsky-Korsakov's parents, his brother and uncle lives.

Composer's childhood is the main theme in the museum exhibit. The "Nika's corner" (Nika was the family name for Nikolai RiN.A. Rimsky-Korsakov House Museummsky-Korsakov) is recreated in the house. The school manuals and books of the first half of XIX century, copies of child Nika's paintings are displayed on the table and secretaire.

Among the other composer's belongings the rosewood grand piano used by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov for more than 30 years has a special significance. It witnessed Rimsky-Korsakov in the prime of his life. The piano followed the composer when he moved to other apartments. It was his companion of many of his creations. His friends and students - M. Balakirev, M. Mussorgsky, A. Dargomyzhsky, A. Glazunov, A. Lyadov, I. Stravinsky, P. Chaikovsky played this instrument. F. Shalyapin and N. Zabela-Vrubel sang accompanied by the piano.
