Gorno-Altaisk is the capital of the Altai Republic . The capital is situated in the North-Western part of the Republic, on the territory of Maiminsky Region. The territory of the city covers 91 square km. The capital of the Altai Republic has got the status of the city only in 1928. Before that it was a settlement Ulala, founded in 1830. The distance from Gorno-Altaisk to Moscow is 3641 km, to the nearest railway station - the city of Biysk - about 100 km. The city population counts 53,1 thousand people (2001.01.01). Enterprises of the following branches of national economy are situated on the territory of the city: light, food, building materials, printing, machine-building and metal working.
