Khanty-Mansiysk is a centre Khaty-Mansiysky autonomous okrug. It is situated in Western Siberia on the river Irtysh (the port) 15 km from its flowing into Ob. The distance to Moscow is 2759 km, to Tyumen - 777 km. The climate is continental with long severe winter. Average temperatures of January are -18-23, of July + 16-19 degrees centigrade. Precipitations are about 500 mm a year. The nearest railway station Priobiye is situated at the distance of 331 km from Khanty-Mansiysk. But there is an airport. The population is 35,0 thousand people. (1992). Khanty-Mansiysk was founded in 1931 as a settlement. Since 1940 it is called Khanty-Mansiysk. It was a part of Uralskaya oblast, in 1934 - of Omskaya oblast, in 1944 - of Tyumenskaya oblast. In 1950 it became a city. In modern Khanty-Mansiysk there are such enterprises as the fish-canning plant, the furniture factory, "Khantymansiyskles" association, the poultry farm, the large beast farm (breeding of silver fox, polar fox and mink). Here one can find the Museum of local lore (the rich ethnographic collection), the Park - Museum with monuments of wooden architecture of Khanty and Mansi. Wooden constructions of 1930s are preserved here. There is the famous Nature Sanctuary Samarovsky Hill (Ust-Irtyshskaya mountain). |
