The Godoberins (self-name is the G'ibidy) live in Russia. There are about 3 thousand persons of them. The Godoberins belong to the Andian nations, and they are indigenous population of the Western Daghestan. They speak the Godoberian language, which have dialects. Also the Avarian and Russian languages are common. Writing is the Avarian based on the Russian writing. The Godoberins are the Moslems - Sunni by the religion.
The Godoberins traditional occupations are agriculture (wheat, barley, millet, later corn) and cattle breeding. The important trades are gardening, viniculture, a hunt and beekeeping. The domestic industry and crafts are: weaving, processing of leather, wool, metal, a timber, a stone, and manufacture of felt.
Many of the Godoberins live in cities. They are employed in the industry. A mosque is the centre of settlement where men spent a free time. Approaches to the settlement were protected by sentry and fighting towers.
Men's costume consist of a shirt, trousers, beshmet, the Circassin coat, sheepskin coat and hats of the various form, felt cloak. Men carried belts, the gazyry and daggers. Footwear was made of leather, morocco, felts etc. Women wear a dress - shirt, a dress, trousers, a headdress (it was decorated with silver coins), a scarf and leather boots with a felt top.
The tradition food consists of cheese, cottage cheese, sour milk, whey and meat dishes, farinaceous food and fruit and vegetables. The most common dish is the khinkaly with meat and seasoning.
Family is usually a small. Related and neighbour's mutual aid is most common. Funeral ceremonialism combines elements of the pre-Muslim and Muslim ceremonies. Various legends, fairy tales, songs, proverbs and sayings are genres of the traditional folklore. Some of them are bilingual. Legends about local heroes are popular among the Godoberins.
