The Lipetskaya oblast is located in the central part of East European plain, within the limits of Central Russian upland (height - 246 m), in pool of headwaters of Don. Enters into Central Black Earth economic region. Borders to Tambov, Ryazan, Tula, Kursk and Voronezh oblasts. Date of oblast formation - 06.01.54. The area - 24,1 thousand sq. km, including the area of farmland - 18,46 thousand sq. km and area of an arable land - 15,62 thousand sq. km. Lipetskaya oblast has a wide range of natural resources: limestone, sand, clay, peat, dolomite, wood, water and fish resources, mineral and raw materials deposits. In the woods could be found: foxes, wolves, badgers, polecats, ermines, hares, beavers, elks, deer's and other animals. There also could be found different birds: quails, ducks, partridges, etc. The economic potential of the Lipetskaya oblast is based on multi-branch industry (60% of regional gross output). It includes the following industries: ferrous metallurgy, engineering, power, chemical, construction materials, food and light industry. The number of large and medium enterprises totals 247. The oblast has developed transport infrastructure. The Lipetsk airport could provide services for all types of aircraft's. The oblast has 7 higher educational institutions which train students and staff specialists under the various vocations accepted by the present economic situation. Industry is a leading branch in the economic sphere of the region which ensures 60% of all the gross output in the region. Industry includes main the following branches: ferrous metalls, machinery-engineering, electro-power engineering, food industry, manufacture of construction materials, chemical, light industries. The industrial basis of the region consists of 247 large and medium sized enterprises. The main part of them 85% are enterprises of non- State sector which produced 98% of the volume of industrial production. Farmland known as "Black Earth" prevails in the Lipetsk region. Agricultural production is based on the plant growing. The lands of the region as the whole are constituted by 1900 thousand hectares, arable lands occupy 65% of the territory of the region, gardens - 26 thousand hectares. The processing industry is highly developed in the region. Lipetskaya oblast became the initiator of modern teaching methodology development and brought novations to the training and upbringing processes at schools. Lipetskaya oblast has a wide net of cultural establishments, including 594 clubs (32 are in town locality and 562 - in the countryside); 12 museums, 3 theatres: 2 drama theatres and 1 puppet-show, 574 mass libraries. There are a number of interesting places of sightseeing on the territory of the region: the country-seating complex in the village of Palna-Mikhailovka, the Omen Church in Lipetsk region constructed by famous architect V.Bazhenov and the other architectural pearls, erected by V.Bazhenov, K.Ton, A.Voronikhin, B.Rastrelli. There are a number of archeological monuments in the region: the encampments of the primitive men, the settlements and sites of ancient towns of bronze and early-iron centuries.
